What is a facelift?

A cervico-facial lift corrects sagging in the lower face and neck: it reduces jowls, redefines the facial contour, smooths marionette lines, and tightens the neck.

SMAS: Reposition rather than pull.

The SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) is the deep musculofibrous layer of the face. It provides support for the tissues.

By working at this deep level—rather than just on the skin’s surface—the surgeon restores volume to its proper place without putting tension on the skin. The goal is not to pull, but to reposition. This is the key to a harmonious and long-lasting result, without the artificial appearance sometimes associated with facelifts.

Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

It is intended for women and men with significant sagging of the lower face or neck who are seeking a long-lasting solution. The recommended age range generally starts around 45–50, but this depends primarily on the degree of sagging and the condition of the skin, rather than on age alone.

Each case is medically evaluated during a consultation.

How does the procedure work?

It all begins with a surgical consultation, during which Dr. Brilmaker assesses the sagging, determines whether the procedure is indicated, and explains the procedure in detail.

The procedure lasts an average of 3 to 5 hours and is performed in a clinic under general or local anesthesia with sedation. The incisions are made to be as inconspicuous as possible: in front of and behind the ear, as well as along the hairline. The procedure is most often performed on an outpatient basis.

What are the consequences and outcomes?

Recovery is gradual and takes 2 to 3 weeks. Swelling and bruising are to be expected during this period but will eventually subside. Lymphatic drainage is recommended starting on day 3 to speed up healing, and patients can generally resume social activities after 2 to 3 weeks.

Results begin to appear as early as the 3rd or 4th week and are fully evident after 3 to 6 months. A facelift does not stop the aging process, but the face retains its reshaped contours for much longer than it would have without the procedure: a well-defined jawline, a firmer neck, and a rested appearance.
